#19 Creighton (18-10) @ Villanova (14-14) – FOX
Coming off a tough home loss to Marquette, Creighton will be looking to swing momentum in their direction as we make our push towards the conference tournaments. Villanova on the other hand is coming off an impressive road win at Xavier, and will need some post-season miracles to find themselves in the NCAA Tournament this year.
Creighton has one of the deadliest 3 headed monsters in all of college basketball. Junior big man Ryan Kalkbrenner leads the Bluejays on both ends of the floor. Baylor Scheierman and Ryan Nembhard make this Creighton offense one of the most dangerous in all of college hoops.
It’s a down year for Nova, but they have improved throughout the course of the season. I just think Creighton will be too much for them. It’s so important for teams to be at their best heading into conference play, which is right around the corner. Coach McDermott will have them ready to go.
PICK: Creighton -2.5 (-110)
#24 TCU (18-10) @ Texas Tech (16-12) – ESPN2
TCU has been the better team all season, but as of late, the Red Raiders have been hot.
Led by Kevin Obanor, Texas Tech has won 4 in a row. The win streak includes home wins versus Texas & Kansas State, two of the best teams in the country. They’ve also won on the road at Oklahoma and West Virginia.
I’m confident Texas Tech holds it down at home and covers. The win streak continues.
PICK: Texas Tech -1.5 (-120)
Arkansas (19-9) @ #2 Alabama (24-4) – ESPN2
This isn’t going to be a popular pick, but I love this spot for Arkansas. Baring any late season tragedies, the Razorbacks should have an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Like every other team in the country, Arkansas will focus on being at their best come post-season.
Freshman guard Nick Smith Jr. had his coming out party earlier this week against Georgia after returning from injury a few games ago. He finished with 26 points on 9/14 from the field. Smith gives the Razorbacks a much needed shot creator, which is necessary if you’re going to take down Alabama.
There was a ton of drama surrounding the Tide and head coach Nate Oats – centered around star player Brandon Miller. Miller responded with a 40 point outing in an overtime victory at South Carolina. I don’t think the media and this story will have a real affect on Alabama, but you never know.
This game truly will come down to Nick Smith Jr. If he can score, Arkansas will compete & should have zero issues covering 8.5 points.
PICK: Arkansas +8.5 (-110)
#8 Texas (22-6) @ #9 Baylor (20-8) – ESPN
Baylor is coming off a tough road stretch with losses at Kansas & Kansas State while Texas is coming off back-to-back wins on their home stretch.
These aren’t only two of the best teams in the Big 12, but two of the best teams in the country. Baylor is led in the scoring department by Freshman phenom Keyonte George, while Texas is led by one of the most experienced guards in the country in 5th year senior Marcus Carr.
Texas won the last meeting in Austin in a close game, so I expect another close game today. With the line at 3.5, Baylor has good value. Bears cover.
PICK: Baylor -3.5 (-110)
Auburn (19-9) @ Kentucky (19-9) – CBS
After some rough early season struggles, Kentucky seems to be turning things around. Auburn has been the opposite, after starting the season red hot, the Tigers have slowed down.
Kentucky needs to finish strong to make the NCAA Tournament. They are on a 3 game win streak including a win over 10th ranked Tennessee last Saturday. This is not your typical John Calipari team of highly touted Freshman, as the Wildcats are one of the most experienced teams in the SEC.
Even when Kentucky was struggling, I was confident they would turn things around and make a run at a National Championship. Oscar Tshiebwe & Kentucky will be too much for Auburn today. One of my favorite plays on the board today.
PICK: Kentucky -3.5 (-120)
#6 Virginia (21-5) @ North Carolina (17-11) – ESPN
The Tar Heels have been a huge disappointment this season. After coming in at pre-season #1, the Tar Heels fell out of the Top 25 weeks ago and are on the border of missing the NCAA Tournament.
Virginia has been excellent but just lost by double digits at Boston College. Tony Bennett’s team have always been known for slow and methodical pace of play with a huge focus on being solid defensively. Combine that with North Carolina’s inefficient offense & I’m not expecting a ton of points here.
I rarely take totals in college basketball, but I like this number too much.
PICK: Under 130.5 (-110)
