11:00 AM EST (ESPNU) – Stanford (3-3) @ Memphis (3-2)
Kicking off a fabulous slate of college basketball, Stanford meets Memphis in the State Farm Fieldhouse to decide 3rd and 4th place tournament finishes for the 2022 ESPN Events Invitational. Ole Miss & Oklahoma will meet up afterwards for 1st & 2nd place finishes.
Stanford comes into this one as 6 point underdogs. Memphis could & should probably win, but I anticipate it being a close game. These teams have two different styles, with Stanford having 4 starters averaging over 10 points per game (3 of the 4 are over 50% from the field through 6 games). The Tigers on the other hand are led by Kendric Davis who puts up over 20 per game. The only other player on Memphis in double figures is forward Deandre Williams who comes in at 13.2 ppg.
If Stanford can keep Davis in check and force other Memphis players to beat them, they should have no problem keeping this within 6. I would be surprised if this one doesn’t come down to the wire.
PICK: Stanford +6 (-110)
1:30 PM EST (ESPN) – Ole Miss (6-0) @ Oklahoma (5-1)
In the tournament final in Kissimmee, FL, the undefeated Ole Miss Rebels will meet Porter Mosers Oklahoma Sooners. Oklahoma is winners of 5 straight after dropping their season opener to Sam Houston State (who by the way, is my favorite team in the country).
The total sits at 125.5 this morning. I really can’t wrap my head around why. Both teams play an “average” pace of basketball, but can score in bunches. Directing the offense on both sides is going to be play-making point guards who also lead their clubs in scoring.
These are good offensive teams & winning preseason tournaments is important for momentum. Expect both teams to come out ready to play… 125.5 should be an easy cover.
PICK: OVER 125.5 (-110)
9:30 PM EST (ESPN) – #8 Duke (6-1) @ #24 Purdue (5-0)
I was really high on Duke coming into the season, and “undecided” on the Boilermakers. If you would have told me 3 weeks ago I’d be taking Purdue +3 this early into the year, I’d have called you crazy.
Both teams have had some early season battles, which should make this game even more fun. Purdue beat the shit out of Gonzaga yesterday, as Zach Edey looks dedicated to making his case for Player of the Year.
The Blue Devils will rely heavily on their two Freshman bigs, Dereck Lively Jr and Kyle Filipowski to contain the 7’4 Junior for Purdue. Having Ryan Young off the bench will help Duke try to contain Edey by committee, but I’m not confident they will have an answer.
Duke has depth, and they are arguably the more talented team. Purdue is on a roll, so I don’t expect anything other than this to come down to the final seconds. BUY THE POINT. Purdue is currently two point dogs, I love them at +3.
PICK: Purdue +3 (-130)
