New York Mets (Scherzer) @ New York Yankees (German)
NYM F5 3-way (-112)- This subway series matchup looks better on paper with two first place clubs but they have been trending in opposite directions recently. The Mets have played well all year but the Yankees have been mired in their worst slump of the season by far and have lost 14 of their last 18 games. The starting pitching matchup also favors the Mets as they have Max Scherzer on the hill tonight and he has been great this year with a 2.15 ERA over 109 innings along with a 11.06 K/9. Even at age 37 he has maintained close to the same average velocity as the rest of his career. His average fastball this year is 94.0 MPH and going back to when he was 23 each season his average has been somewhere between 93.7 and 95.1 MPH. The Yankees counter tonight with Domingo German who is making just his 7th appearance of the season after missing most of the year with a shoulder injury. So far this year he has 4.45 ERA over 28 innings and his K/9 has decreased by 1 each of the 5 years he has been in the big leagues going from 11.30 to 7.30 K/9. The Mets are favored overall tonight but I’m targeting the starting pitching matchup and going with Scherzer and the Mets to be winning after five innings and taking Mets F5 3-way at -112.
Atlanta Braves (Odorizzi) @ Pittsburgh Pirates (Contreras)
ATL -1.5 (-124)- The Braves are heavy favorites going into this one at -210 ML and for good reason. They have won 12 of their last 13 and just swept the Astros who are the best team in the American League. The Pirates are currently last place in their division 22.5 games out of first place and one of the five worst teams in baseball. The Pirates have Roansy Contreras starting tonight who has some impressive stuff for a 22 year old but struggles with walks averaging 4.19 BB/9 this year which has contributed to his 4.02 ERA and 4.82 FIP for this season. The Braves have veteran Jake Odorizzi on the mound tonight who has been solid this year but I’m expecting the difference tonight to be the Braves offense and I’m going with the relative value of ATL -1.5 (-124).
