Arizona Diamondbacks (Gallen) @ Cleveland Guardians (McKenzie)
CLE F5 3-way (+108)- Cleveland young pitcher Triston McKenzie had an exceptional July with a 1.34 ERA over 5 starts. Zac Gallen has been solid this year with a 3.24 ERA over 105 innings but his K/9 for the year is down almost a full 2 K/9 compared to his previous 3 major league seasons. Over the past month or so, both clubs have top 10 offenses with Cleveland 6th with a 110 wRC+ and Arizona not far behind at 9th with a 106 wRC+. Both teams are also 5-5 over their last 10. Given the relatively similar recent performance tonight I’m rolling with who I think is the better starting pitcher and going with McKenzie and CLE F5 3-way (+110).
Toronto Blue Jays (Gausman) @ Tampa Bay Rays (Rasmussen)
TB F5 3-way (+170) – Gausman’s ERA by month has gotten progressively worse each month as the season has progressed. .219 in April, .272 in May, up to 3.96 in June and finished July with a .509 ERA. Gausman actually faced the Rays on July 2nd and was forced to exit the game after 2 innings after wearing a 100mph Wander Franco line drive off his lower leg. For whatever reason, he seems to be trending in the wrong direction at this point in the season. Rasmussen had a 2.59 ERA over his last 5 starts this July which brings his ERA for the season to 3.17 over 82 innings. Both offenses have performed similarly over the past month (120 wRC+ vs. 119 wRC+) so again tonight I’m going with the starting pitcher at home for the first 5 that has been playing better lately and going with TB F5 3-way (+160).
Detroit Tigers (Manning) @ Minnesota Twins (Archer)
DET F5 3-way (+180)- Tigers’ 9th overall pick in 2016 Matt Manning returns tonight from the 60 day IL after only making 2 starts in April. This one is a little more risky since he is coming off injury but he rehabbed well in AAA and has an above average 4 pitch mix and is projected to be a frontline starter. Chris Archer looks to right the ship tonight after two ugly starts where he gave up a combined 10 earned runs on 7 walks and 8 hits in only 7.2 innings across two losses. The Twins have the better offense here but if Manning can make it through 5 or so, Detroit has a sneaky good bullpen and actually has the 3rd best bullpen team ERA in all of baseball (.303 ERA) and the Twins are 13th at .384 ERA. Tonight I’m again primarily making my choice based on the starting pitching but going with the money line for the full game rather than just the first 5 to get the potential benefit of the Tigers bullpen and going with DET ML (+165) tonight.
