Philadelphia Phillies (Nola) @ Pittsburgh Pirates (Brubaker)
PHI -1.5 (-108) / PHI F5 3-way (-132) – Aaron Nola has pitched well this year putting up a 3.32 ERA with an underlying 2.94 FIP and 9.77 K/9. His 1.15 BB/9 is the best in all of baseball among qualified starting pitchers. This afternoon he faces the Pirates which have been the worst offense in the National League going back to June 1st (83 wRC+). JT Brubaker has been solid this year with a 3.96 ERA in 100 innings but today I’m rolling with the Phils offense and Nola and taking PHI -1.5 (-108) and PHI F5 3-way (-132).
Arizona Diamodbacks (Kelly) @ Atlanta Braves (Fried)
ATL -1.5 (-112) – Max Fried has pitched like an ace this year with a 2.73 ERA and 2.47 FIP over 125 innings, on pace to get up to 200 innings for the season which is a rare accomplishment these days. His 125 IP are currently 7th in all of baseball this season and in 2021 only 4 pitchers surpassed 200 innings. Since June 1st the Braves have had the 5th best offense in all of baseball with a robust 119 wRC+ while the Diamondbacks have been 23rd at 93 wRC+. Merrill Kelly has been good this year with a 3.04 ERA and especially of late in July with a 1.57 ERA over 4 starts but I am going with Fried and the Braves at home and taking ATL -1.5 (-112)
Milwaulkee Brewers (Ashby) @ Boston Red Sox (Winckowski)
MIL -1.5 (+110) – The Red Sox season is circling the drain already before we reach August 1st as they slip below .500 and have lost 13 of their last 16 games. Rafael Devers is on the IL and you might confuse half their roster with Worcester’s. Ashby has a mediocre 4.38 ERA this year but it’s hard to picture the Red Sox winning these days. Josh Winckowski has a 5.18 ERA this year and over the last 30 days the Red Sox offense has been 25th in the league with an ugly 87 wRC+. This afternoon I’m expecting the Red Sox struggles to continue and going with the value of MIL -1.5 (+110).
