Boston Red Sox (Sale) @ New York Yankees (Cole)
BOS ML (+165) – The Red Sox were embarrassed by the Yankees yesterday in a 14-1 drubbing and are in the midst of a 3-9 skid in back to back series against both the Yankees and Rays. They desperately need a big start from their stopper and ace Chris Sale this afternoon on the road in the Bronx. Sale returned from injury last week and looked like his usual self; scattering 3 hits and 1 walk over 5 scoreless against the Rays. He was limited to 78 pitches last week but the Red Sox will need him to go deeper into the game today to salvage the last series before the All Star break. The Yankees counter with Gerrit Cole who is having a good year (3.05 ERA) but was touched up by the Red Sox 10 days ago on 7/7 for 5 earned runs over 6 innings. The Yankees are favored at home today (-195 ML) but I’m going with the value of BOS ML +165 and betting on Chris Sale to have a big day and for the Red Sox to build on their recent success against Cole.
Baltimore Orioles (Lyles) @ Tampa Bay Rays (Kluber)
TB F5 3-way (-104) – Rays vet Corey Kluber is coming off two good back to back starts against the Red Sox where he limited their offense to 2 earned runs over 12 innings. The Orioles are riding high, winners of 11 of their last 12 that included a 10 game winning streak. They are still only 1 game over .500 and last place in the AL East but their young core looks to be coming together and tonight they add the first overall pick in the MLB draft to their already stacked farm system. The Rays offense has been hot lately, over the last 30 days they have been the 6th best offense in all of baseball (116 wRC+). Orioles starter Jordan Lyles has looked better in his last couple of starts but is coming off a 6.28 ERA in June and the Rays had success against him earlier this season scoring 5 earned runs on 7 hits over 5 innings back in April. Today based on the starting pitching matchup I’m going with Tampa to be winning after 5 and taking the TB F5 3-way at -104.
Chicago White Sox (Cease) @ Minnesota Twins (Archer)
CWS F5 3-way (-107) – We are rolling with Dylan Cease for the first 5 again today. He has been spectacular over the last two months posting a 1.08 ERA so far in July and a microscopic 0.33 ERA for the month of June. As Silvio Dante would say: “Disgusting“. Chris Archer has put up a solid 3.08 ERA this year but has a 4.88 FIP and career worst 6.9 K/9 and 4.4 BB/9. He is also coming back from a 15 day stint on the injured list for hip tightness. He pitched 50 innings in a rehab start on Tuesday so we might only see an abbreviated start from Archer today. Given all of these factors, I am going with Cease and the White Sox for the first 5 especially when the odds are relatively modest at -107.
