- In 1934 a group of citizens in Tulsa raised $140,000 for a new country club on land donated by Waite Phillips, a local oil baron
- Perry Maxwell was hired to lead a crew that built the course for $113,000
- Southern Hills opened in 1936, hosted the 1946 U.S. Women’s Amateur, the 1953 U.S. Junior Championship, and the U.S. Open in 1958.
- The PGA Championship is played at different courses each year; 2021 at Kiawah Island’s Ocean Courses and 2020 at T PC Harding Park
- The last PGA Championship played at Southern Hills CC was in 2007 (won by Tiger Woods)

- It was formerly played in mid-August on the third weekend before Labor Day weekend, serving as the fourth and final men’s major of the golf season
- Beginning in 2019, the tournament is played in May on the weekend before Memorial Day, as the season’s second major following the Masters Tournament in April
